Greetings! I'm Mrs. Carroll. I've been teaching music at the Nottingham School since 2002, and I love my job.
I've loved music all my life. My first song was written and performed in second grade by all the girls in my class for the school talent show. It was called the "goo goo gaa gaa babies." It wasn't very good, but it was the start of my music career. Heres a picture of me in the school concert in first grade. I'm in the second row peeking out from behind the girl in the check shirt. I don't seem to have any teeth.
I started taking piano lessons in 5th or 6th grade and then switched to flute in high school so I could be in band. I loved band. I was student conductor twice, and band president by my senior year. This was when I decided for sure that I wanted to be a music teacher. I loved the feeling of a baton in my hand! Band took two big trips. One to perform at Disney World my senior year, and one to perform in Arlington Virginia. Heres a picture of us at "Fiesta-val" my sophomore year of high school. (I'm in the front row, second to the right.)
At around that time, I became obsessed with The Beatles and formed a band called Apple Scruffs with another Beatles fan. Heres one from Henniker's Old Home Days I think. I'm the one with the flute.
I decided to go to Plymouth State College to study music education. What a great school! I formed my own 3 piece band called "Big Mama T and the Mamas Boys." Yes, my nickname in collage was "Big Mama T. " We did mostly songs I wrote, including "Joel Cage, the Prince of Darkness," "Peeping Tom," and "Movie Star," but we also did some fun covers. Heres one of me from that time. (I can't find one of my mama's boys!)
After a wonderful year teaching music in Henniker, I was hired to work full time at the Nottingham School. I love to teach band, but I also love to teach singing, african drums, contra dancing and the history of rock and roll. I love teaching kids music.
So outside of school, I'm sort of a maker. I love sewing and knitting and repurposing things. I love to listen to audiobooks, so if you see you walking around with my mp3 player and headphones, I'm actually reading. I love playing music with friends, and recently formed the Nottingham Community band which is an absolute blast! I am married to Dave Carroll, and have 3 terrific kids: Donovan, Liam and Gwenna. I love them, but I am not having any more! I also have a mini schnauzer named Shadooby after the Rolling Stones song. He is very naughty. Heres a final picture of my family.
